Last Wednesday, Gillespie County deputies discovered explosives in a U-Haul during an inventory check. The vehicle, stored in the Sheriff's impound lot, was linked to 46-year-old Zachary Richard Rhyne from Cathlamet, Washington. Rhyne had been arrested days earlier for stealing over $400,000 in coins and precious metals, as per an official release obtained by My San Antonio.
During a routine search around 10:00 a.m., officers found explosives that were deemed too dangerous for transport, necessitating the San Antonio Police Department Bomb Squad's expertise. Multiple agencies, including the ATF, FBI, and San Antonio Fire & EMS, responded to the scene. An official told CBS Austin that a safety zone was set up, and the explosives were either detonated or disarmed on-site.
In addition to the explosives, officers found significant amounts of ammunition, a handgun, and body armor in the vehicle, according to a release from My San Antonio. These findings heightened the potential danger associated with the suspect and the U-Haul. Officials declared the area secure and safe after their thorough work, which concluded around 10 p.m.
Rhyne, the U-Haul's owner, is now in Gillespie County Jail facing more than just theft charges. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that his crimes extend beyond the initial theft. Additional charges are expected as the case develops.
