Early this morning, a bicycle crash in Houston resulted in a fatality, at the 5700 block of South Wayside Drive. As per a report from the City of Houston, the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. and involved a male cyclist, whose identity remains undisclosed pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The cyclist, believed to be between the ages of 50 and 60, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes without a light or reflector. It was then that the individual was struck by a southbound gray Subaru Baja pickup truck. In a statement obtained by the City of Houston, HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant L. Ross and Officer R. Saenz reported the sequence of the crash, and the paramedics pronounced the man deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Subaru, a 25-year-old male, did not exhibit signs of impairment at the time of the accident. According to the official report, he remained at the scene following the crash, cooperated with the authorities, and, after being questioned, was released. The Houston Police Department has indicated that their investigation into the circumstances of this tragic event is ongoing. Additional updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
