Tragedy struck Madison Township last Saturday night when a crash involving two vehicles led to both being engulfed in flames, leaving one driver in critical condition. ABC6 reported that the accident occurred just after 10:30 p.m. on U.S. Route 33 when an SUV attempted to turn onto Bixby Road in front of a van, resulting in the collision that followed with a rapid, fiery aftermath.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office detailed that the white Ford van and gray Toyota 4Runner crashed when the Toyota, moving east, turned left in front of the westbound Ford, causing a situation wherein the vehicles not only collided but were soon swallowed by flames a white Ford van was driving west on U.S. 33 while a gray Toyota 4Runner was moving east, and the Toyota turned left in front of the Ford. According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, the van collided with the Toyota. The Columbus Dispatch notes that the impact led the Toyota to block both highway lanes, facing south, while the truck ended up off the roadside and in a ditch.
Emergency responders acted swiftly to rescue both drivers from the inferno. The individual behind the wheel of the Toyota was extracted from the vehicle before the fire engulfed the passenger side. At the same time, the Ford's operator had the good fortune of exiting the van before flames took hold. Post-accident care saw the Toyota's driver rushed to Mount Carmel East Hospital in a critical state.
