An alarming discovery occurred on a school bus in Mustang, Oklahoma, when a first grader brought a loaded firearm on board today. As reported by OKC Fox, law enforcement was notified after the student from Prairie View Elementary School was found in possession of the weapon. The situation was promptly handled and the firearm secured without incident, Mustang Public Schools (MPS) confirmed.
Details of the incident were provided by MPS officials, stating that the student boarded the bus at 6:53 a.m. and displayed the weapon to other students during the commute. These actions break not only the student code of conduct but also board policy on Mustang Public School properties. The student exited the bus at 7:17 a.m., and the weapon was taken into police custody by 7:18 a.m., according to a statement given by the district officials to KOCO. Parents and staff were alerted to the alarming incident through an email from the district, which assured them that the safety of students and faculty was a top priority.
"Thanks to a strong partnership between students, parents, and staff, the situation was identified, investigated, and resolved quickly," MPS officials stated in the message passed on to parents and were quoted by KOCO. District officials emphasized the need for parents to discuss with their children the importance of reporting any concerning or suspicious behavior, as well as the serious consequences of bringing weapons onto school property.
In response to the incident, district officials urged parents not to only reinforce the importance of safety and awareness with their children but to also ensure firearms are stored securely, out of the reach of any child, as noted in the statement obtained by The Oklahoman. The district's email to parents highlighted their commitment to the safety of students and staff, stating, "We take this matter very seriously and are cooperating fully with law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation." They also reiterated the importance of promptly addressing any threats to the safety of the school environment.
