In an effort to aid recovery from the devastating Hurricane Milton, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a significant state investment for repairs at SeaPort Manatee. Speaking in Palmetto, DeSantis detailed the $9.5 million allocation intended to mitigate infrastructure damage at the vital port facility, as NBC Miami reports. Emphasizing the importance of the port to the region's supply chain, DeSantis said, "The goal is to minimize supply chain interruptions that would affect Florida residents in need, which is why the state is investing in the rebuild."
The governor also conveyed the state's financial strategy, projecting that, "for every dollar the state invests in the port, it would receive a $7 return on investment," a positive outlook for the state's economic recovery efforts, according to NBC Miami. Meanwhile, Governor DeSantis has updated that power restoration efforts are nearing completion with nearly four million Floridians, or about 97% of the affected population, now reconnected, though 369,000 customers are still awaiting power restoration, according to a WFLA report.
Alongside DeSantis during the announcement were Major General John D. Haas, Adjutant General of Florida, Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie, and Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue. They discussed the broader recovery measures and strategies following the hurricane's toll on the region.
Florida has secured a major disaster declaration from FEMA, enhancing the availability of funds and support for the affected areas. Guthrie urged residents to classify storm damages accurately during their aid requests. "Anyone who combined the damages between the two hurricanes could experience a delay in getting assistance," he said to NBC Miami, underscoring the need for specificity in damage reporting. This protocol is designed to streamline aid distribution and assist Floridians impacted by Hurricane Milton and also by a prior storm, Hurricane Helene.
