In response to the urgent needs of Hillsborough County residents during the emergency, the Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM) is providing charter bus services to transport people to emergency shelters. This service aims to assist those who cannot reach safety on their own. Buses will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and residents needing evacuation help can call (800) 729-3413.
With the schedule set for today, several buses will traverse Hillsborough County, including areas like Tampa and Plant City, doing rounds between various supermarket locations, such as Winn-Dixie and Publix. Despite the strong winds expected, the Hillsborough Transit Authority (HART) is also contributing to the effort by offering free bus service heading to shelters up until 8 p.m. today.
The shelters opened to residents are varied, including general population shelters that are also pet-friendly, located in schools like Burnett and Durant High Schools, as well as shelters specifically catering to those with special needs and their pets. Shields Middle School, Sickles High School, and Middleton High School are also on the list, as detailed by Hillsborough County's announcement. Pizzo Elementary School remains the sole shelter designated for the general population that does not accommodate pets.
Special attention is being given to residents who need extra support, including those who rely on electricity for medical reasons or have cognitive conditions.
