A worship leader from Elevate Life Church in Florida is currently jailed following allegations of unlawful sexual activity with a 16-year-old member of his congregation. Jeremiah Paul Grover, 32, has been implicated in a scandal that culminated after a three-month investigation by local enforcement, according to CBS12. The Clay County Sheriff's Office reportedly began to look into claims of Grover's engagement in "criminal sexual activities" between March and June.
The investigation revealed Grover to have exchanged over 27,000 text messages with the minor, some of which contained lewd content, as detailed by court documents. Authorities allege that these communications were aimed to facilitate to meet and engage in sexual acts with the teen. Grover is facing charges including sexual battery, lewd and lascivious touching, and unlawful use of a two-way communication device, among others, as per records from the Clay County Jail. His bond has been set at $325,015.
In a statement obtained by the Miami Herald, Pastor Mark Mellen, chief financial officer of Elevate Life Church, expressed the church's dismay, saying, "Our heart breaks for any person who is a victim of such abuse." The church acted swiftly by terminating Grover's employment shortly after they were informed of the incidents and ensured law enforcement and Child Protective Services were notified.
Despite the severity of the charges, law enforcement does not currently believe there are other victims involved in this case. Elevate Life Church has stressed their commitment to safety, outlining the background checks, employment screenings, volunteer vetting, and safety trainings they conduct. "Elevate Life has made it a top priority to not only provide spiritual care but also provide safe environments for anyone attending our services or events," Mellen stated on behalf of the church, in a report by Miami Herald.
Members of the community or individuals with any information related to the case are encouraged to contact the Clay County Sheriff's Office at (904) 264-6512 or reach out anonymously to the First Coast Crime Stoppers at (866) 845-TIPS.
