In a step toward publicly affirming its commitment to diversity and inclusion, the City of Fort Collins is set to proudly unveil its first-ever 'rainbow crosswalk'. Located on Howes Street, adjacent to 214 N. Howes St., this colorful addition to the city's streetscape is more than just a fresh coat of paint, it's a statement in support of the LGBTQ+ community. The crosswalk's debut is neatly timed to coincide with LGBTQ+ History Month and to precede National Coming Out Day on October 11.
City Manager Kelly DiMartino highlighted the message behind the crosswalk, saying, "Coming out is a powerful act of authenticity and bravery that fosters understanding and connection." She continues to acknowledge that, despite progress, "many still feel hesitant to come out at work." According to the City of Fort Collins, the crosswalk aims to visibly communicate Fort Collins' dedication to creating a safe, supportive environment where hesitation to live openly can gradually be left behind.
Widely recognized as a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and advocacy, the rainbow flag dates back to the 1970s. Today's Progress Pride Flag, with its broader array of colors, seeks to be even more inclusive, specifically acknowledging queer people of color and the trans/nonbinary community. The crosswalk on Howes Street boldly embraces this inclusive spirit, weaving vibrant colors around the traditional white stripes that pedestrians have grown accustomed to.
For Thursday, Oct. 10, Howes St. will be closed from Laporte Ave. to Maple St. during the installation process. Officials aim to justly represent the diversity existing within the LGBTQ+ community with the new crosswalk design. Subsequently, ceremonies to mark National Coming Out Day and to cut the ribbon for the new crosswalk are set for Friday, October 11, at 11:00 a.m. Local leaders will be in attendance to offer their remarks, and members of the community are encouraged to join in support as the city wears its heart on its sleeve, or more aptly, on its street.
