Chaos was narrowly avoided at a Fort Collins school when police apprehended a man reportedly wielding what appeared to be a gun on campus grounds. The incident unfolded at Liberty Common Charter School, located at 2130 West Horsetooth Road, as Fort Collins Police responded to a weapons call around 3:46 pm on October 21, according to the City of Fort Collins.
The suspect, identified as Brian Sudduth, born May 9, 1991, never entered the school buildings nor came close to any children instead he walked the perimeter before officers safely took him into custody; the school was in the midst of after-hours activities, with staff ensuring students remained secure.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered that Sudduth was carrying a BB gun which bore a striking resemblance to a real firearm. He was arrested and transported to the Larimer County Jail, where he faces multiple charges including interference with an educational institution, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, violation of a protection order, disorderly conduct, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
"The immediate actions taken by Liberty Commons staff and the quick response by our patrol officers and SROs taking this suspect into custody helped to ensure the safety of the children and staff at the school," Lieutenant Mike Avrech, who supervises the Fort Collins Police School Resource Officer Unit, expressed his relief, as per the City of Fort Collins.
