Earlier today, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical incident at 375 E 2nd St in Downtown where at least four people reported sudden illnesses after a possible exposure to an unknown substance. According to an LAFD alert, the symptoms occurred within and outside an apartment building, prompting a full closure of 2nd Street between Central Avenue and San Pedro Street. The LAFD has yet to identify any escalating or off-site hazard as a result of the incident.
The incident unfolded during a law enforcement tactical operation, with police officers from various agencies present when the substance was spilled. Shortly after, three individuals—all believed to be adult male civilians—began to feel subjectively unwell with "non-specific symptoms," as per a follow-up LAFD update. Two of these patients were transported to an area hospital, where one subsequently refused care. The LAFD Hazardous Materials Task Force is actively working to positively identify the substance and ensure the area is safe for public access.
No additional patients have been affected by the incident as of now, as reported by the LAFD. The local authorities advise travelers to avoid the affected area and to consider alternative routes while the closure remains in effect. The estimated time for reopening the street has not been specified, leaving commuters to navigate detours for the time being.
