Four men from Florida have been apprehended in St. Tammany Parish after a traffic stop uncovered a significant amount of fentanyl, according to the local authorities. The search, which took place on Interstate 12 near Slidell on Saturday, revealed 11 pounds of the potent synthetic opioid concealed within a secret compartment of one of the two Florida-registered vehicles, as reported by NOLA.com.
The traffic stop involved detectives from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, with the support of Homeland Security Investigations and a U.S. Border Patrol K-9 unit that ultimately detected the drugs. It was confirmed that the men were traveling westbound, from Florida to Louisiana. The discovery of the fentanyl carries an estimated street value of $388,000, as noted by WDSU. The four men arrested face various charges, including possession with the intent to distribute schedule II controlled substances, with one also cited for improper lane use.
The individuals identified in the stop are Mervin Cruz of Saint Cloud, Alexis Clintron of Davenport, and Shaquan Stridiron of Orlando, Florida. As per WGNO, this interception halts a considerable quantity of a drug known for its high potency and the role it has played in the ongoing opioid crisis in America.
Details regarding bail for the accused or their legal representation have not been made public. This arrest underscores the collaboration between local and federal agencies in combating the flow of illegal narcotics on the nation's highways—a joining of forces, that hopefully yields a meaningful blow to local distribution networks. The Sheriff's Office has not released further details on the origins or the intended destination of the drugs within Louisiana.
