The ongoing RICO trial involving Atlanta rapper Young Thug, born Jeffery Williams, and other defendants tied to the Young Slime Life collective experienced another setback when one of the co-defendants, Shannon Stillwell, was reportedly stabbed by another inmate. According to Hoodline, the incident, which took place on the evening of December 10, occurred at the Fulton County Jail and prompted the court to pause proceedings momentarily.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville informed the jury of a "medical issue" that had arisen, delaying the trial. Stillwell, also known as Shannon Jackson and "SB," is currently in stable condition after the altercation with inmate Willie Brown. Brown, in custody since July 2020, faces his own set of serious charges, including aggravated assault, murder, and cruelty to children, Hoodline reports.
In addition to this disruption, the trial proceedings were previously put on hold to investigate the origin of a missing file from a state's witness, with the jury off until later in the week, as FOX 5 Atlanta detailed. This came after the trial judge had called out the prosecution for trial delays, accusing them of "poor lawyering."
Delays persisted with the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office filing motions, including one to reconsider an exhibit’s ruling and an opposition to objections they argued would be a "waste of time." Defense attorney Doug Weinstein countered early Wednesday, suggesting the state was engaging in frivolous legal tactics, as per FOX 5 Atlanta. Amid these legal maneuvers, the case about the YSL collective, which the prosecution deems a criminal enterprise and the defense asserts is purely a musical outfit, continues to unfold.
The trial is facing a lot of attention, not only because of Young Thug's celebrity status but also due to its impact on the community. The prosecution is trying to connect YSL to various crimes, including a 2015 drive-by shooting, while the defense claims the defendants are innocent. One member, Gunna, has already felt the pressure of the legal process, opting for an Alford plea.
As the trial resumes on Wednesday morning, it is expected to bring more updates amid ongoing challenges and discussions about YSL, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
