Devon Graham, implicated in the firearms-related incident at Gardens Mall on Valentine's Day, has been meted a 12-year sentence for his crimes. The judgment came down earlier today at the Fort Pierce Federal Courthouse, where Graham faced the consequences of his actions and expressed his remorse before the court, as reported by WPBF.
At the sentencing, which was attended by WPTV's Kate Hussey, Graham was seen accompanied by family members some of whom shed tears upon hearing the agreed sentence. During the proceedings, Graham read out a letter in which he acknowledged the gravity of his error and his intent to shoulder full accountability for the same, his letter also noted a personal transformation with him stating he has grown closer to God and is committed to righting the course of his life since the shooting incident, according to WPTV.
The 12-year custodial sentence was the outcome of a consensus reached between the prosecution and the defense, reflecting perhaps a mutual agreement on the fittingness of the term relative to the crime. “This sentence gives him the opportunity to make his life right,” Gregory Morse, Graham’s attorney, told WPBF, indicating hope for his client’s potential redemption.
While this chapter closes for Graham, who has chosen not to challenge the imposed sentence, another awaits Kamario Mitchell, his alleged antagonist on that chaotic day at the mall, who is scheduled for sentencing come November – both had earlier pleaded guilty to weapons charges. It was during a tense moment caught on an escalator when Mitchell, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, made a perceived threat that provoked Graham to fire, the incident in question causing a prolonged seal-off of the shopping complex.
