An investigation is underway following an incident involving a MARTA police officer and an 18-year-old man at Rev. James Orange Park in the Oakland City neighborhood. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is looking into the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday evening, though specifics regarding the event were not initially disclosed. This event marks the 70th case of use of force the GBI has been asked to investigate this year.
Further information obtained by WSB-TV revealed that the incident began with a police response to a robbery at the nearby Oakland City MARTA Station. Carnell Kelly, the suspect in the robbery, fled the scene to James Orange Park and, when confronted by officers, he brandished a knife and refused to obey commands to drop it police say the suspect then engaged in a struggle with the officers, during which a gun discharged, fortunately, no one was injured in the fray.
The GBI specified that no one was shot when the officer's firearm discharged, and Kelly was subsequently taken into custody. As of now, no charges against Kelly have been announced as authorities continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the struggle and subsequent discharge of the firearm.
MARTA officials and law enforcement are closely monitoring the incident and awaiting the outcome of the GBI's investigation. The shooting seems to have had a minimal impact on MARTA services, with no disruptions reported at the Oakland City MARTA Station, located just a few blocks from the park where the event took place.
