In response to a troubling rise in incidents involving pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users (VRUs), Grove City has launched a new safety initiative named 'Road Safety Starts With Us.' With VRUs facing higher injury risks when involved in vehicular collisions, the city's Department of Public Safety has swung into action, conducting a comprehensive safety analysis of crash reports from the beginning of 2019 through late June. This initiative, detailed in an official Grove City announcement, aims to mitigate the dangers facing VRUs on the streets of Grove City.
The specified analysis identified hazardous roadways, including Hoover Road, Broadway, and Stringtown Road. The Department of Public Safety has analyzed crash report data, revealing these streets as common stages for vehicular dramas involving the city's most unprotected actors, walkers, bikers, and those in low-speed conveyances. Having walked the high-crash roadways during audits, the need for improved sidewalks, crosswalks, better lighting, and enhanced pedestrian signals was underscored.
At the heart of Grove City's intervention is the "Road Safety Starts With Us" campaign, which strives to instill traffic safety awareness across all road users. The ideal outcome is a shared sense of responsibility, highlighting those on wheels and foot and the role each plays in preventing accidents.
Complementing awareness efforts, the Grove City Division of Police is also ramping up enforcement, with an ambitious goal for 2024 to reduce crashes involving VRUs.
