Gwinnett County's commitment to its veteran community was underscored this past weekend with the successful execution of its second annual Stand Down event. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson spearheaded the day focused on providing healthcare, housing assistance, job training, and legal support to veterans and their families. Gwinnett County's official press release highlighted the event's offerings, as well as the Chairwoman's reflections on the community's dedication to its service members.

"The Stand Down reflects the very best of Gwinnett County," Hendrickson commented, "It is an honor to stand with our veterans and their families, recognizing their sacrifices and showing our community’s commitment by providing real, tangible support. I am incredibly proud of everyone who came together to make a difference this weekend." This sentiment was echoed by District 3 Commissioner and retired Lt. Col. Jasper Watkins III, a veteran himself, who emphasized the importance of community support for those who have served, according to Gwinnett County's official press release.

As noted in the county's announcement, the Stand Down event is a concrete display of support mobilizing a variety of community resources. A remarkable effort by Gwinnett County's 14 departments resulted in a collection drive that amassed over 5,000 essential items for veterans, including socks, beanie caps, and toiletries.

These items not only served the immediate needs of veterans who attended the Stand Down but will also bolster the resources of the County’s Warming Stations, and aid in mobile food distributions. Watkins vocalized his appreciation, obtained by Gwinnett County's official press release, "As a veteran, I understand how important it is to feel supported by your community. The Stand Down reaffirms our dedication to making a difference in the lives of veterans and their families, and I’m proud to serve in a county that values our veterans."
