A 25-year-old man, David Sanchez, was arrested in connection with the homicide of his father in Hayward. According to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, this incident is another stark reminder of the grim intersection of domestic violence and gun-related fatalities.
Sanchez faces murder charges with special enhancements for firearm use and may be looking at a sentence that stretches up to 35 years to life, per District Attorney Pamela Price. "This tragic taking of a life mirrors research that shows the presence of a gun significantly increases the risk of death or serious injury in cases of domestic violence," Price said. This case has unfortunately turned up as an example where a father is dead, allegedly at the hands of his son, as per the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
The unsettling chain of events commenced with a welfare check initiated by the deceased's family, leading Hayward Police to a warehouse where evidence of the shooting was discovered, as reported by Hoodline, in a follow-up to an unrelated crime. Sanchez was taken into custody by the Oakland Police Department, during which statements made by Sanchez prompted another welfare check on his father.
Following Sanchez's arrest, he revealed the location of his father's body, leading authorities to a dumpster on Central Avenue in Union City, where the victim was found. The Hayward Police Department is treating the discovery as the city's 13th homicide of the year and is calling for anyone with information to speak up. Anyone knowledgeable about the homicide's circumstances should contact Detective Navas at 510-293-7176.
