Following a high-speed chase that spanned several cities, the culmination of law enforcement's pursuit of a robbery suspect ended in gunfire on Interstate 15. Reports from the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department indicate that on the evening of October 14, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance where 39-year-old Hesperia resident, Robert Brown, was said to have assaulted his spouse and stolen her cell phone.
Later that night, at around 9:41 p.m., Brown was located by deputies near Main Street and Topaz Avenue driving a blue Infinity sedan. The suspect led the authorities on a lengthy pursuit after failing to stop, endangering the public as he traversed the streets and freeways at high velocities. During the chase, efforts to safely end Brown’s flight, including pursuit intervention techniques and spike strips, were deployed but ultimately resulted in a lethal force encounter near the intersection of northbound Interstate 15 and State Route 138, according to official statements from the Sheriff's Department.
Brown sustained gunshot wounds at the end of the pursuit and was subsequently hospitalized. Following treatment, he was booked on charges of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse, robbery, and felony evading with disregard for safety. The specifics of the altercation and the reasons why lethal force was employed have not been disclosed at this time.
