Archer Aviation and AEG announced plans Monday to build downtown Los Angeles' first electric air taxi hub at L.A. LIVE, the four-million-square-foot sports and entertainment district next to Crypto.com Arena. The proposed vertiport would let Archer's Midnight aircraft ferry fans, athletes and artists in and out of the venue complex ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the company positioning itself as L.A. LIVE's exclusive air taxi provider.
As reported by the New York Post, Archer and AEG have already completed an initial feasibility study examining land use, airspace, available power and potential community impacts at the site. The two companies say they are still reviewing operational plans and passenger use for the proposed facility, which would mark Los Angeles' first planned downtown electric air taxi hub. Archer has also announced additional planned air taxi locations at SoFi Stadium, USC and Hollywood Burbank, building toward a broader Southern California network.
A Flagship Piece of a Bigger Network
Archer executive Adam Goldstein described the L.A. LIVE project as a flagship addition to the company's planned Los Angeles air taxi network, per the Post's reporting. That network is expected to lean on Hawthorne Municipal Airport as its central operational hub — a site Archer moved to control through a $126 million agreement announced in November 2025, according to a Business Wire release. Hawthorne sits less than three miles from LAX and close to major venues including SoFi Stadium, Intuit Dome and Downtown L.A.
Archer says some Los Angeles car journeys can take an hour or longer, and its planned network is designed to cut trips across the city to roughly 10 to 20 minutes. AEG's Nick Baker said the company is thrilled to pursue the endeavor with Archer to enhance the fan experience around major sports and live-entertainment events, the Post reported. The planned vertiport would provide fans, athletes, artists and visitors a potential direct travel option to and from L.A. LIVE, which is expected to host 19 Olympic and Paralympic sports during the 2028 Games.
Team USA Livery on Display Through Tuesday
Archer and AEG unveiled a Midnight aircraft Monday featuring a new Team USA Olympic livery at L.A. LIVE, and the aircraft will remain on public display through Tuesday. Archer is the official air taxi provider of LA28 and Team USA. The Midnight aircraft is an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing design built for short urban trips, using redundant systems as Archer works toward safety levels it says are comparable to commercial airliners.
Specifications published by Electric VTOL News describe the Midnight as capable of carrying four passengers and one pilot at speeds up to 150 mph on routes up to 60 miles, with charging systems designed for 10-minute turnarounds between short hops. The aircraft's 12 electric propellers are mounted on a fixed wing, producing significantly less noise than conventional helicopters, according to Archer. The company also says the aircraft produces zero operating emissions.
Charging Network and Regulatory Runway
The proposed vertiport is expected to feature electric aviation chargers supplied by BETA, part of Archer's ACES consortium — America's Consortium for Electric Skyways — which Archer launched with BETA Technologies and Macquarie Capital in July 2026 to establish standardized charging infrastructure at up to 250 U.S. air taxi sites by 2030, according to FLYING Magazine. That buildout mirrors the broader infrastructure push needed nationally before electric air taxis can operate at scale.
On the regulatory side, Archer announced in May 2026 that it became the first eVTOL developer to complete Phase 3 of the FAA's four-phase type certification process, moving the Midnight into Phase 4 for formal airworthiness verification, Airways Magazine reported. The FAA's Powered-Lift SFAR rule, finalized in October 2024, established operational and pilot certification standards for eVTOL air taxis as the first new civil aircraft category introduced in the U.S. since helicopters in the 1940s, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. In March 2026, the White House and U.S. Department of Transportation selected Archer as an air taxi partner for the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, enabling early real-world flight operations across eight states.
Competition and City Oversight
Archer isn't alone in racing to build out L.A. air routes. Rival developer Joby Aviation entered FAA Stage 4 certification in early 2026 and maintains a commercial partnership with Delta Air Lines for home-to-airport air taxi connections in Los Angeles and New York, per FLYING Magazine. Joby has also pursued preliminary discussions for demonstration flights at Santa Monica Municipal Airport ahead of the 2028 Games.
Locally, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation established an Urban Air Mobility Policy Framework in February 2026 to guide land-use permitting, vertiport integration, noise thresholds and equity guidelines ahead of the Olympics. The framework emerged from LADOT's collaboration with city planners and community stakeholders aiming to balance new transportation options against noise and privacy concerns. Air taxis are also entering a regional transit conversation shaped by a transit-first strategy that planners are pursuing for the 2028 Games, as described by CalMatters, which combines Metro rail expansions, dedicated bus corridors and other alternatives meant to move millions of spectators without overwhelming Southern California highways.
Archer's push into downtown L.A. comes just weeks after the company signed definitive agreements to acquire Boeing's autonomous flight and defense drone subsidiaries — Wisk Aero, SkyGrid and Insitu — in an all-stock deal that gives Boeing a stake of nearly 20 percent in Archer, as Hoodline previously reported. Whether Archer and Joby can complete final FAA type certification in time for full commercial passenger service before 2028, and whether air taxis end up serving everyday Angelenos or remain a novelty for VIPs and athletes, remain open questions as the Olympic clock keeps ticking.
