The solemnity of mortality intersected the everyday bustle of Hilo streets last weekend when a young motorcyclist's life was abruptly claimed in a traffic collision. Hawai‘i Island police have released the identity of the 20-year-old motorcyclist who died following a two-vehicle crash that occurred in Hilo on September 29. The victim was identified as Isaac Dakujaku of Hilo.
Dakujaku's final journey came to a tragic end at the intersection of Ainaola Drive and Komohana Street. Authorities reported that the incident took place at 9:35 p.m. on Sunday, where Dakujaku's 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling southwest on Ainaola Drive and proceeded to suddenly collide with a 2015 Nissan sedan that was executing a left turn onto Komohana Street. The collision's circumstances are still under investigation, with the Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit working to carefully unravel the chain of events.
First responders found Dakujaku unresponsive upon their arrival. After being hastily transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, he was pronounced deceased at 10:22 p.m. The autopsy is pending, set to shed light on the exact cause of death for the young Hilo resident.
The municipality's inquiry into the incident continues, and they are handling the case as a negligent homicide.
