Tragedy struck Albany State University during its Homecoming Weekend when a shooter opened fire in a crowded area near a campus concert last Saturday evening, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the incident occurred at approximately 8:50 p.m., and a rapid response was initiated by the Albany State University Police Department with support from local and state law enforcement agencies.
The initial confusion surrounding the number of victims has been clarified, with the GBI confirming that five individuals were shot, and a sixth was injured in the chaos that ensued. One victim, 19-year-old De’Marion Tashawn Daniels from Newnan, Georgia, who was not an ASU student, lost his life. Among the wounded were minors and students from local schools, including a 13-year-old girl and two teenagers, ages 17 and 16, all sustaining gunshot wounds. Additionally, a 20-year-old girl was grazed by a bullet.
Survivors received prompt treatment at a triage site on campus before being transferred to a local hospital for additional medical care. In the aftermath, ASU implemented a campus-wide lockdown and conducted a search for the suspect(s), although no arrests have been made thus far.
The GBI is leading a thorough investigation into the violent incident that overshadowed a weekend meant for celebration. They are asking the public for any information that could help clarify the case.
