Houston authorities are piecing together the details of a fatal crash that occurred yesterday evening on the Eastex Freeway. The collision claimed the life of a 40-year-old woman, whose name has yet to be released pending identification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The incident, as confirmed by a nearby surveillance camera, unfolded just after 7 p.m. when a silver Chevrolet Trailblazer, reported stolen, was engaged by Humble Police officers. The suspect's desperate escape led him onto the Eastex Freeway service road, heading south in the northbound lanes, a disregard for direction that would soon have grave consequences, as reported by City of Houston News.
According to HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Hall and Officer A. Mares, the pursuit saw various departments disengage, but Montgomery County Precinct 4 deputies continued the chase until the Trailblazer collided with a silver Kia Soul near 16100 Eastex Freeway.
The occupants of the Kia, a 40-year-old woman and a 43-year-old male passenger, were immediately rushed to the hospital by paramedics from the Humble Fire Department. The woman was pronounced dead upon arrival, while the male passenger's condition remains undisclosed. The 25-year-old male suspect was detained without further incident, and charges against him are being mulled by the Humble Police Department and the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, as per City of Houston News.
Investigation efforts have since divided between the two major scenes: The Houston Police Department is evaluating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision, while the Humble Police Department handles the origins of the chase and the stolen vehicle inquiry. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to surface as these two agencies delve further into the case.
