Motorists in Kahului should brace for early-morning traffic delays as the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced lane closures at a major intersection this week. According to an HDOT release, the lane closures are scheduled for Puʻunēnē Avenue, Kūihelani Highway, Maui Veterans Highway, and Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, and Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m.
The closures will allow crews to dismantle an old camera system, paving the way for operational improvements, including the installation of new traffic detection cameras at the intersection. Each day, there will be two sets of different lane closures affecting various directions of traffic. Motorists can expect to see the right through lane in the southbound direction of Puʻunēnē Avenue and the left through lane in the westbound direction of Kūihelani Highway among the closures for the first set on Tuesday.
HDOT has provided detailed diagrams of the anticipated traffic patterns during the closures. For example, on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, during Closure 1, additional lanes, including one left-turn lane in the westbound direction of Maui Veterans Highway and the left through lane in the westbound direction of Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way, will also be shut down. They urge commuters to plan accordingly and suggest reviewing the available diagrams online for a clearer picture of the impacted routes.
HDOT reminds the public to "drive with caution and to follow all traffic control signs through the work zone." They emphasize the importance of remaining alert to ensure safety and minimize disruptions during these intervals of infrastructure improvement.
