The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation announced a full closure of the Likelike Highway, one direction at a time starting tomorrow. The reason behind the headache: paving work that's part of an ongoing effort to improve the roadways.
Closures will start at 8:30 a.m. and end by 2:30 p.m. each day. Tomorrow, there will be a contra-flow near Burger King for Kailua-bound traffic. On Tuesday and Wednesday, drivers heading into town will face lane closures and detours. HPD will be on-site to help manage traffic during the construction, according to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.
For those mapping out their commute, expect the right lane on Kamehameha Highway, Kailua bound, to be closed from the vicinity of Kapalai Road to the major intersection. Townbound drivers on Kāneʻohe Bay Drive will be navigating a "Right lane must turn right" instruction from ‘Aumoku to the contraflow area, not just on Monday but through the first part of the week, as reported by the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.
The Kamehameha Highway repaving project between Pali Highway and Likelike Highway is expected to finish by Wednesday. However, the intersection will undergo renovations starting in January 2025. The work is scheduled for nighttime to minimize disruptions for commuters and protect local seabirds.
