Residents of Kapa‘a will need to adjust their trash disposal habits for the coming months. The Kapa‘a Refuse Transfer Station is set to undergo renovations as of November 2, through August 2, 2025, according to an announcement by Solid Waste Officials. While the green waste section remains operational, the main Refuse Transfer Station will be inaccessible as improvements aimed at efficiency and environmental protection are implemented, according to the County of Kaua'i.
Marked by posted signs, the closure of the Kapa‘a Refuse Transfer Station is part of a larger Island-wide Refuse Transfer Station Improvements project. Water quality standards and stormwater discharges enhancements are being targeted by these improvements. During the period of renovation, residents, having trash, tires, motor oil, and propane tanks, will need to reroute to alternate sites: the Līhu‘e Refuse Transfer Station or the Hanalei Refuse Transfer Station, based on an official release disclosed by the County of Kaua'i.
"These renovations will allow our refuse transfer station to operate more efficiently while providing environmental safeguards," said a statement issued by the Solid Waste department. The public has been urged to stay informed and to patiently endure the inconvenience, with an assurance of future benefits. More information about these Island-wide upgrades can be sought by contacting the County of Kaua'i Recycling Office.
As for scrap metal and appliances are concerned, which are not accepted at Līhu‘e Refuse Transfer Station, these items can be processed directly at Puhi Metals Recycling Center on Puhi Road, where residents, along with eWaste for recycling, can deliver these materials. Meanwhile, Hanalei Refuse Transfer Station will accept these specific items as well. Community members seeking further details or help can call the provided number 808-241-4841 or visit the County of Kaua'i dedicated recycling page through the previously mentioned link.
