The County of Kaua‘i Housing Agency has taken steps to improve local wastewater management by notifying recipients of the Residential Cesspool Conversion Grant Program. According to a recent announcement, the selected homeowners received emails this week and have until November 4, 2024, to confirm their interest in the grant.
Out of the pool of applicants, the top 100 were chosen to potentially receive a $20,000 reimbursement grant. The County's Housing Agency urges recipients to sign a grant agreement to secure the funding, with reassurances that there will be no request for personal or financial information via unsolicited phone or email communications. Concerned recipients can verify the legitimacy of the notification by contacting the Housing Agency directly at 808-241-4444, as mentioned on the county's website.
The agency reported that nearly 375 applications were submitted for the program, which aims to upgrade current cesspools to wastewater systems approved by the Hawai‘i State Department of Health-Wastewater Branch. Those applicants who were not selected for the initial grant were placed on a waitlist and will remain under consideration for potential funding if any initial awardees decline.
The program's funding stems from the Hawai‘i State - DOH Water Pollution Control Revolving Fund (WPCRF), dedicated to supporting environmental health initiatives. It represents a focused effort to address pollution and public health concerns associated with outdated cesspool systems.
