Knoxville commuters can now enjoy a new fare payment system called katpay from Knoxville Area Transit (KAT). Launched yesterday, katpay uses a fare capping strategy to make bus travel more affordable and convenient for riders.
According to the City of Knoxville website, Katpay caps fares at $2 per day and $30 for 30 days, so riders won’t pay more than needed. Instead of buying daily or monthly passes, they can pay as they go, with the system tracking usage automatically. Isaac Thorne, Director of Transit for the City of Knoxville, stated, "Our new katpay system allows passengers to pay as they go, ensuring that they pay the best possible rate every time they board a bus."
Katpay offers ease and flexibility for users, eliminating the guesswork of choosing between a day pass or paying per ride. The system automatically caps spending, making public transportation more accessible for everyone. This change shows KAT's commitment to providing equitable access to public services.
Thorne envisions a future where public transit is affordable for everyone in Knoxville. He said, "This system is a huge step forward in making public transit accessible and affordable for all of Knoxville," as per the City of Knoxville.
