Lakewood residents gearing up for autumn cleanups can take solace in knowing they have a free, environmentally-friendly option to dispose of their fallen leaves. Starting Nov. 16, the city of Lakewood will begin its annual free leaf recycling initiative, set to help locals neatly rid their yards of leaf litter while contributing to a greener community initiative. As reported by the City of Lakewood, the recycling event is scheduled to run through Nov. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily at the city greenhouse, located at 9556 W. Yale Ave.
City officials are available to assist on two specific dates, Nov. 16 and 23, aiming to ensure that residents can properly carry out the disposal process. This effort is crucial in transforming organic waste into useful compost, mulch, and other recycled landscape materials. Residents are reminded that this service is exclusively for leaves, other forms of yard waste, such as branches or tree stumps, will not be accepted. To maintain the city's commitment to sustainability, no bags are allowed, even those labeled as compostable. In addition, proof of Lakewood residency will be required for drop-off.
Beyond aiding in yard cleanups, the city’s initiative serves as a reminder about the significance of lawful disposal practices. Lakewood Municipal Code specifically prohibits residents from sweeping or blowing leaves into the streets. This act could result in clogged storm drains and potential damage to street sweeping equipment. The city's notification reiterates the collective responsibility residents hold in maintaining clean and functional streets.
To further communicate the importance of these measures, city officials urge residents to strictly adhere to these guidelines. Not only does such compliance help to prevent potential drainage issues, but it also significantly contributes to sustaining the environmental integrity of Lakewood’s urban landscape. The leaf recycling program is more than just a local cleanup endeavor, it represents a collective gesture to take seriously the call to stewardship over the shared spaces that all residents call home.
