
A school crossing guard was hit by a vehicle Thursday morning in Largo, resulting in hospitalization but no life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of 8th Ave NW and Clearwater Largo Rd, involving the guard being hit by a Chrysler 300 while assisting an adult across the street. According to WTSP, the victim is a member of the Largo Police Department and is expected to make a recovery.
The driver of the Chrysler remained at the scene and was cited by police, who indicated that there were no signs of impairment at the time of the crash. Furthermore, a statement obtained by WFLA confirms that the individual received a citation after the accident occurred at a busy intersection, which is typically manned by part-time school crossing guards during the school year.
Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the injured crossing guard to a nearby hospital. As noted by FOX 13 News, the actions taken indicate that the guard suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and the adult they were assisting was unharmed in the incident.
"School crossing guards are hired part-time during the school year and are placed at high-frequency intersections throughout Pinellas County," the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office reads, as stated by WTSP. The collaboration between the Largo Police Department and paramedics ensured prompt assistance for the injured guard and a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.
