A Las Vegas man was handed a seven-year prison sentence for illegal firearms possession following a shootout on Fremont Street. According to information from the U.S. Attorney's Office, DaJuan Lamar Gamble, also known as "Popeye," engaged in an exchange of gunfire that was caught on motel security cameras.
During the September 1 incident, Gamble fired shots from a 9mm semi-automatic pistol at an SUV, responding by its occupant firing back with .40 caliber rounds. While hiding in the motel's boiler room, the authorities discovered the pistol and a semi-automatic rifle, the latter being a stolen weapon from Dallas, Texas.
The Department of Justice reported that Gamble pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of firearms in October 2023. His prior convictions, which prohibit him from firearm ownership, include charges like accessory to murder and possession of drugs with intent to sell.
Special Agent in Charge of ATF, Jennifer Cicolani, highlighted the importance of public safety, stating, "Ensuring the safety of the public is at the forefront of ATF's mission." She further expressed the commitment to maintaining Las Vegas community safety and prosecuting those prohibited from having firearms. This case reflects the collaborative efforts of the ATF and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Dan Cowhig and David Kiebler, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada, Jason M. Frierson, alongside Cicolani, made the conviction announcement. The public is encouraged by authorities to report illegal firearm activities to the ATF. Reporting can be done anonymously through their website or by contacting them directly.
