The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred yesterday in the west valley area of Las Vegas. According to KTNV, the incident took place near West Flamingo Road and South Fort Apache Road. Details on the encounter are scarce at this time as it is an active investigation, with the promise of more information to come.
The events leading to the shooting began around 9 p.m. when officers were alerted to a suspicious vehicle displaying a stolen license plate parked near a local business at the aforementioned intersection. Upon the officers' arrival, the vehicle left the scene; however, it was later located, and a female suspect who attempted to flee on foot was confronted by the police. During this confrontation, "an officer confronted her as she reached into her bag, and believing she was armed, he discharged his firearm," according to a statement obtained by 8 News NOW.
The woman continued to evade police, subsequently barricading herself in a backyard shed. A SWAT team, accompanied by crisis negotiators from LVMPD, was deployed to manage the situation. They ultimately succeeded in taking the woman into custody, though it was confirmed that she had not been struck by the officer's gunfire. Medical attention was nonetheless requested and provided at the scene.
With the investigation still underway, the Las Vegas Metro police have called upon the public for assistance. Anyone with information relevant to the case is encouraged to reach out.
