According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Hartfield joined the force in 2006, serving dutifully first in the Patrol Division then moving to the Project Management and Video Bureau. Besides his dedication to immediate service, he was a voice for those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice, contributing significantly to the memorial wall for fallen officers at the Southeast Area Command.
Hartfield's legacy stretches beyond law enforcement to his military service, having been a decorated 16-year U.S. Army combat veteran. He notably served with the 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq and was a committed First Sergeant within the Nevada Army National Guard's 100th Quartermaster Company. It was on October 1, 2017, at the Route 91 Harvest Festival where Officer Hartfield, whilst off-duty, chose to quickly act to save lives during what turned into a tragic mass shooting—a decision that led to him losing his own life at the age of 34.
