An incident late Wednesday night on Waterloo Road in Lawrence County has left a deputy hospitalized and a wanted man in custody following an attempted traffic stop. WSMV reports that Deputy Robert Klein, while conducting the stop at approximately 9:30 p.m., was struck by a vehicle driven by Jose Antonio Lopez, Jr., who had multiple arrest warrants.
As it unfolded, Deputy Klein managed to fire one shot through the vehicle's windshield before being hit and knocked into a ditch. It was later found that Lopez might have been struck by that round. Despite his injuries, Lopez fled the scene, prompting an intensive manhunt that included ground teams, drones, tracking dogs, and a helicopter. According to a statement obtained by FOX17, this operation to quickly find Lopez stretched into the next day. He was eventually discovered hiding in a barn on Thursday morning after a tip guided authorities to his location.
Deputy Klein was seriously injured during this encounter. The Main Street Media TN reports that Klein was flown to Nashville for medical attention and is currently listed in stable condition. Lopez also sustained an injury from the encounter—a gunshot wound to the shoulder—and received medical treatment prior to his arrest.
Throughout the pursuit and subsequent arrest, another individual was involved but not charged. "Lopez’s girlfriend was also and occupant in the car. She was detained and later released," as mentioned by WSMV. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, reflecting on the collaboration necessary to bring this ordeal to a close, expressed gratitude to all first responders involved in the staunch effort to apprehend Lopez.
Following the arrest, Lopez faces multiple felony charges. Details regarding his capture and updates on Deputy Klein's condition continue to circulate, shedding light on the risks law enforcement officers face and the resilience of the justice system in the face of such challenges.
