Residents in Lake County grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Milton have a beacon on the horizon as local officials announce the opening of a Storm Recovery Center. Slated to begin operations on October 21, the center will occupy space at CareerSource Central Florida in Leesburg, providing an array of services to community members and businesses trying to rebuild. According to an update on Lake County's official website, the facility will be a hub for federal, state, and non-profit organizations all working toward recovery and aid.
Transportation will not pose a barrier to those seeking aid, as shuttle service to the Storm Recovery Center will commence from several designated locations throughout the county. Starting Monday, individuals can catch rides from points including the Butler Street Boat Ramp in Astor and the Pine Forest Park in Deland, ensuring residents have access to the necessary resources without the added strain of displacement.
Among the participating resources, Lake County Offices will be on hand to assist with housing, building permits, and economic development, including income-based disaster mitigation assistance. CareerSource Central Florida will offer crucial unemployment assistance, along with job placement and recruitment services for those whose livelihoods were swept away by Milton’s wrath. Also present, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will guide individuals through the application and appeal process to secure federal aid.
For residents weighed down by the emotional toll of the disaster, organizations such as Hope Florida, American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army will offer both emotional and financial recovery support. Additional services, including legal assistance from Community Legal Services and behavioral health from LifeStream Behavioral Center, will provide a support system for the yet unquantifiable losses. It’s worth noting, as Lake County's release states, that the availability of these resources may vary.
The Storm Recovery Center's doors at CareerSource Central Florida, located at 9909 US-441, Bldg. M in Leesburg, Florida, will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
