A Missouri man has pled guilty to the sexual exploitation of a child after recording himself engaging in sexual contact with a 10-year-old girl. Russell Alan Pirkey, 54, of Linn County, acknowledged his guilt during proceedings in the U.S. District Court in St. Louis on a charge that carries a significant mandatory minimum sentence.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Pirkey used his cell phone to document the unlawful contact. The incident came to light on April 8, 2023, after concerns about his behavior with the victim were reported to the Brookfield Police Department. Following an investigation led by local law enforcement and the FBI, various electronic devices including a cell phone, a tablet, and storage devices were seized and are now subject to forfeiture.
Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative spearheaded by the Department of Justice, encompasses this case. The program's aim is to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse and involves collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies to locate and prosecute offenders, as well as identify and rescue victims.
Pirkey is now facing a sentencing date set for January 14, 2025. The charge of sexual exploitation of a child has a mandatory minimum of 15 years, with the potential for up to 30 years imprisonment. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Chapman, who is prosecuting a case, has emphasized the gravity of the crime and the concerted efforts of law enforcement in bringing such perpetrators to justice.
