Edmond's Deer Creek High School was briefly placed on a lockdown Monday afternoon after students reported the presence of an unauthorized individual on grounds, later identified as a former student. According to KFOR, the person was taken into custody by local law enforcement, prompting the school to lift the lockdown.
The school district sent an email to families explaining the situation and commended the efforts of the students who alerted authorities, as reported by News On 6. "We are thankful for our continued partnership with law enforcement who worked tirelessly on this and kept us informed throughout the night," said Maggie Leftwich, Deer Creek public information officer. Security measures were efficiently implemented due to the students' timely reporting.
School officials have reiterated the importance of maintaining visible Deer Creek High School badges and have reminded students not to open exterior doors for anyone lacking proper identification. This directive comes as part of heightened security measures following the incident. The former student was confirmed to have left campus on video footage before being apprehended, as per information released by KOCO.
The lockdown resulted in delayed bus services and the cancellation of all school activities at Deer Creek High School for the day. Students who were set to arrive for the seventh hour were advised to return home. Classes are expected to resume as normal on Tuesday, providing a sense of normalcy back to the students and faculty affected by the events.
