Long Beach Police Department released a Critical Incident Video concerning an officer-involved shooting on August 7th this year, alongside other evidence in accordance with Senate Bill 1421 and Assembly Bill 748. The incident, unfolding near Pacific Avenue and 5th Street, is under a multi-level review process by the police department, with an independent investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office also taking place. Long Beach Police Department has advised viewer discretion for the graphic footage contained within the released video.
The confrontation that led to the shooting began when officers responded to reports of a man, later identified as Tyrell Harris, brandishing what seemed to be a firearm at the Metro Rail platform at West 5th Street and Pacific Avenue at approximately 9:10 p.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department. When officers arrived, Harris fled the scene on foot, leading to a pursuit eventually ending with police gunfire. KTLA quoted the police saying, "Officers engaged him in a foot pursuit, at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred."
Harris, a 35-year-old individual experiencing homelessness, was later booked on multiple counts including criminal threats and assault with a deadly weapon. The object in question, originally believed to be a firearm, was later identified as an operable BB pistol with CO2 cartridge and BBs. Harris received medical attention for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his upper body before being transferred to the Long Beach City Jail where he is held without bail.
In the wake of the shooting, Metro services faced disruptions. ""Due to police activity near the A Line (Blue) Pacific Station in downtown Long Beach, a temporary bus bridge was activated to help Metro customers access areas near the station or connect to other transit services until the station reopens," Metro spokesman Patrick Chandler explained in a statement published by CBS Los Angeles. The train services experienced delays, running 20 to 40 minutes behind schedule during the incident.
As the investigation continues, detectives encourage anyone with information about the incident to come forward. No injuries to officers or bystanders were reported. The ongoing review of the incident will likely address the protocols and decision-making processes that led up to the use of force. Individuals with information are encouraged to contact Homicide Detectives Sean Magee or Juan Carlos Reyes at (562) 570-7244, or to remain anonymous by reaching out to 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
