A man in Waxahachie, Texas, has sparked a firestorm on social media after he was recorded smashing a Taylor Swift-signed guitar. The incident took place during the Ellis County Wild Game Dinner charity auction, where the man reportedly forked over $4,000 for the guitar. In a video that has gone viral on TikTok, he can be seen using a hammer to enthusiastically demolish the instrument shortly after purchasing it.
According to MySA, a spokesperson for the event said that there was no malicious intent behind the smashing. Craig Meier stated, "It has been surprising to me how big of a deal people are making it out to be. It wasn't meant to be mean or malicious." The apparent motivation behind the act seems to be connected to the pop star's political endorsements; Swift has recently shown support for Vice President Kamala Harris, a move that’s not sitting well with everyone.
The auction at which the guitar met its untimely end is a fundraiser for a non-profit organization supporting agricultural education for local youth. It not only featured the Taylor Swift guitar but also other intriguing items, including what was dubbed the "Hot Mama Package," complete with a massage, facial, and a handgun, as mentioned by Yahoo Entertainment.
HuffPost, in seeking to further understand the bizarre event, reached out to the Ellis County Wild Game Dinner but didn't immediately receive a response. Meanwhile, online reactions have ranged from bewilderment to outright criticism. One social media user sought to thoroughly put the situation in its place: "Dumbass: (Noun) A person who thinks lighting $4000 on fire is 'owning the libs,'" and another noted, "Taylor Swift is worth $1 billion. This doesn’t affect her. He just set $4000 on fire. He must be struggling in this economy," as reported by Yahoo Entertainment.
