Following a distressing incident in downtown Las Vegas, a man was left in critical condition, and another faces charges linked to the event. KTNV reports that Las Vegas Metropolitan Police have detained a man suspected of being impaired at the time of an auto-pedestrian collision yesterday afternoon.
The crash, involving a 2020 Ram Promaster Van and a 60-year-old male pedestrian, occurred around 2:33 p.m. at the intersection of South Fremont Street and a private drive just south of the intersection with Atlantic Street. Police say the van, driven by Jose Ramos-Chavez, was turning left onto southbound Fremont Street with a flashing yellow signal. At that time, the van collided with the pedestrian, who was crossing Fremont Street eastbound in the crosswalk in front of the vehicle, according to 8NewsNow.
Suffering substantial injuries, the pedestrian was taken to the University Medical Center and remains in a critical state. Ascertaining the sequence of events, the Metro police investigation suggested that the van failed to yield the right of way, leading to the pedestrian being projected forward onto the road. Ramos-Chavez, the driver of the van, was reported not to have sustained any injuries in the crash.
Showing signs of impairment, the authorities promptly arrested Ramos-Chavez, who is now facing DUI and right-of-way-related charges. While the investigation into the collision by the LVMPD continues, details emerge, slowly shading in the outlines of the tragedy that unfolded on the streets of Las Vegas.
