A man is in critical condition following a shooting in the Nutbush neighborhood of Memphis. According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), the incident occurred on Saturday night after 10 p.m. when officers responded to a reported aggravated assault at 3735 Whittier Road, as per Local Memphis article.
MPD officers who arrived at the scene activated their body-worn cameras to document the situation, which involved a man who had self-transported to the reported location after being shot, as noted by Action News 5. The man, found in a silver Lexus SUV, told police that he'd been shot and had driven himself to a home on Whittier Road. While sitting in his vehicle, the victim stated that a woman was responsible for the gunshot wounds. A witness recounted a disturbance before the shooting, where they saw a man and a woman engaged in a heated altercation that escalated when the man began punching the woman, unsuccessfully trying to pull her into the SUV.
The conflict continued as the assaulted woman freed herself from the man's grip and sought refuge in the witness's driveway. The man left the premises but returned shortly after, parking in front of the witness's home. According to police, "The woman then called someone and another man walked up from Villa Drive and handed the woman a gun," as mentioned by Action News 5.
The witness gave officers a harrowing account of how the woman approached the SUV and fired four shots into the vehicle. This plunged the Nutbush area into a violent scene. Both the woman and the man who supplied the gun fled—she in an unknown direction, and he running north on Villa Drive. The man who was shot was later transported by the Memphis Fire Department to Regional One Health and remains in critical condition. Neither the woman nor the gun provider has been detained, as reported by FOX13 Memphis.
Following the shooting, both the lieutenant and major arrived to assess the situation while crime scene officers collected evidence and took photographs. The Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) and the felony response team also provided investigative support. Authorities confirmed that video footage of the incident, captured by the witness, has been obtained and is part of the ongoing investigation.
