A kiteboarding session turned tragic at First Encounter Beach in Eastham, Massachusetts, when a man died after experiencing a medical emergency on Saturday morning. As reported by NBC Boston, the unidentified man was pulled from the water by the Eastham police and firefighters, who were called to the scene around 9:45 a.m. following reports of an unconscious individual.
The first responders took over the CPR efforts from bystanders and used a paddleboard to bring the man to shore. According to a statement obtained by Boston 25 News, the man was later transported to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The cause of his death is still under investigation, as it's not clear whether it was due to the kiteboarding activity or an unrelated health issue.
Two officers who were part of the rescue effort at the beach are also recovering after being hospitalized. They were treated for symptoms related to saltwater inhalation and hypothermia, as they entered the challenging conditions of the Atlantic to reach the man. One officer was kept in the hospital overnight for observation but both are expected to make full recoveries, indicating the risks taken by first responders even in a seaside community accustomed to water activities.
Out of respect for the victim’s family and friends, the Eastham police have chosen to withhold the victim's name, as they work with state police to determine the circumstances leading to the emergency.
