A 27-year-old man, Deangelo Wooten, involved in a domestic dispute that escalated to violence, has been sentenced to prison for shooting a 16-year-old teenager earlier this year. The sentencing was reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office on October 4th, 2024. Wooten received an eight-year prison term for the charge of aggravated assault while armed and a concurrent six-year sentence for possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The incident unfolded when Wooten, after sending threatening text messages to the victim including "Imma shoot you dead in your face" and "On dior when I see you imma kill you," asked to meet to retrieve his shoes. The victim, who was at the time involved in a romantic relationship with Wooten, complied and accompanied by two others, went to the agreed location on January 20. Once they arrived at 13th Street and Congress Street SE, Wooten appeared, took the shoes, and, with a firearm drawn, shot the teenager in the arm, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Judge Marisa Demeo delivered the sentence, which also includes five years of supervised release following Wooten's prison term for the assault charge, and an additional three years of supervised release for the firearms offense. In the announcement shared by the U.S. Attorney's Office, both U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela A. Smith commended the investigative work of the Metropolitan Police Department and the prosecuting efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Roessler.
The shooting, which took place in broad daylight, saw the teenage victim suffering from a gunshot wound after having raised her arm defensively, causing the bullet to enter and exit her arm and graze her back. Following the attack, announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela A. Smith, the victim was swiftly taken to the hospital by the accompanying individuals, where she received necessary medical attention. The prompt action, without a doubt, played a crucial role in her survival and subsequent recovery.
