In a chilling incident that unfolded at the Bellaire Police Department, a man was left seriously wounded early this morning after his ex-girlfriend shot him in front of the station. The attack occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m., just as police officers were responding to the victim's distress call suggesting he was being pursued by an armed woman, the Houston Chronicle reports.
Initial calls to the police described a scenario where a Mercedes SUV was relentlessly following a Ford truck. Occupants of the truck were trying to make it to the police station to possibly avoid a violent engagement. It was said by Bellaire Police Chief Onesimo Lopez, who spoke with KHOU, that the pair in the truck were being chased by one of their ex-girlfriends.
The gunfire erupted as soon as both vehicles came to a stop in front of the police station. The suspect, identified as the ex-girlfriend, circled around and opened fire, striking the passenger, her ex-boyfriend, multiple times. In response to the sudden violence, Bellaire police officers on the scene discharged their firearms at the escaping SUV but failed to immediately apprehend the assailant.
The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, was urgently taken to Ben Taub Hospital where he was listed in serious condition. The shocking incident spurred a city-wide search for the perpetrator, whom police have yet to publicly identify but claim to know. Urging the suspect to surrender, Chief Lopez has confirmed that they are working hastily to secure a warrant, according to statements he made with both the Houston Chronicle and KHOU.
