Maui is making progress in its recovery as the County has approved plans to rebuild part of what was lost in last year's wildfires. Kahoma Village, a community housing project, will see the construction of four multi-family buildings, totaling 24 homes that were destroyed in August 2023. Governor Josh Green has directed that these new buildings must match the original sizes and footprints.
As reported by Maui County's official website, the rebuilding permits for Kahoma Village are conditional. They must secure a permanent Special Management Area permit within six months after the governor's proclamation ends. This requirement ensures ongoing compliance with land management rules after the recovery phase. While regulatory compliance is essential, the primary focus is on restoring homes for the Lahaina community.
The government's temporary measures, outlined in the 18th emergency proclamation, provide some flexibility in regulations for areas within the Special Management Area that were heavily affected. Kahoma Village, a 203-unit development, is part of Hawaii's Revised Statutes 201H, which aims to speed up housing projects with over 50% affordability. This initiative is crucial for providing stable and affordable housing options for Maui residents.
