Maui residents can finally mark their calendars for the opening of the new Kahului Transit Center on November 20, 2024, as the County of Maui Department of Transportation has confirmed the date following the issuance of the facility's certificate of occupancy earlier this month. Centrally located near the Kahului Public Library, the new hub will feature open-air covered seating, a necessity for the island's tropical climate, along with restroom facilities and a ticket booth designed to serve Maui Bus riders with both function and ease.
The transit center, which faces the Kahului Lani apartment complex on Vevau Street, represents a significant shift in the county's public transportation infrastructure and a clear step toward improving the daily transit experience for countless passengers. Until now, they have commuted from the temporary setup at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Center, which was never intended to be a permanent solution. Marc Takamori, the County Department of Transportation Director, encapsulated the enthusiasm for the project's fruition: "We look forward to the opening of the new transit center, which will provide a convenient location for bus riders," according to the county's press release.
The transition will mean that all Maui Bus services will operate out of the new Kahului Transit Center from the aforementioned date, with the Queen Kaʻahumanu Center hosting its final day of service on November 19, 2024, right before the switch. This changeover is expected to streamline services and offer improved accessibility to the area's growing population, which has long been in need of a dedicated transport hub.
Takamori also expressed gratitude to Queen Kaʻahumanu Center for their partnership over the years, acknowledging their role in helping provide essential transportation services for the community, a critical collaboration that sustained the island's transportation needs while the new center was under development. Additional details regarding the new transit center's operations and amenities are slated to be released early next month; however, for residents seeking general Maui Bus information, they can visit the official website or contact the County of Maui Department of Transportation directly.
