Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has publicly praised the City Council Public Safety Committee for their recent decision to move forward with the LAPD Chief nomination. The committee voted in favor of Jim McDonnell becoming the city's next police chief, setting the stage for a full council vote on the matter, according to the Mayor's Office. In a meeting that saw an exploration into McDonnell's experience and vision for the city's policing, members, including Chairwoman Monica Rodriguez, discussed how his leadership could shape the future of the LAPD and its relationship with Los Angeles communities.
"I want to thank Chairwoman Monica Rodriguez for her leadership today as well as the other members of the Council Public Safety Committee for their careful consideration of Chief McDonnell," Bass said in praise of the committee's decision. McDonnell, who has committed to serving all residents of Los Angeles, is expected to "grow and strengthen LAPD, deepen relationships with communities across the city, and make sure that Los Angeles is vigilant and prepared for anything that comes our way," as stated by the Mayor's Office.
Chairwoman of the Public Safety Committee, Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, also voiced her approval of the nomination. "I respect Jim McDonnell's tenure of service and leadership as a law enforcement professional. After a comprehensive discussion raising the concerns of our diverse communities, his thoughtful and in depth responses earned the Public Safety Committee’s recommendation to advance for City Council consideration,” she explained, per the Mayor's Office. Rodriguez is enthusiastic to collaborate with McDonnell on addressing the safety concerns of Angelenos in various public spheres.
