San Diegans have a new spot to unwind and play, thanks to the Riviera Del Sol Neighborhood Park opening in Otay Mesa. According to recent announcements, the park's inauguration was graced by Mayor Todd Gloria and City Councilmember Vivian Moreno, who were among those ushering in a new era of community space for the area. "This long-awaited neighborhood park will provide much-needed green space, recreational opportunities, and a place for neighbors to come together,” Mayor Todd Gloria told InsideSanDiego.
Clad in $9.5 million of amenities, the park transforms an empty field into a Mediterranean coastal-themed retreat. Spanning approximately 4.8 acres, Riviera Del Sol boasts a basketball court, two playgrounds, and more for the community's use. In an odd twist, security lighting, benches, and a prefabricated restroom facility are included. Should community members be looking for a sundial, rest assured—it's included as a reference to the park's sunny namesake, 'del Sol'.
The park further represents its name – Riviera Del Sol – with creative features that bring to mind the sun-kissed Riviera coastlines of Europe. Designers planted palm trees and laid down blue rubber surfacing teamed with sand to invoke thoughts of the beach. "I am proud to finally deliver to the residents of Otay Mesa the park they were promised over two decades ago,” City Councilmember Vivian Moreno shared with InsideSanDiego, highlighting the fulfillment of a community's long-standing dream.
Riviera Del Sol is just one of five new parks planned to open this fiscal year, with additional improvements expected in nine existing parks. Meanwhile, various projects in Council District 8 are under development, including parks in San Ysidro and Logan Heights, set to bring utter joy to the communities next year. Reflecting the city's dedication to its green spaces, the Parks and Recreation Department manages an impressive portfolio featuring over 400 parks, among other recreational assets.
