In a plea that concludes over two years of legal proceedings, Cleotha Abston has pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and murder of Eliza Fletcher, a Memphis mother and teacher who was forcefully taken during her early morning jog on September 2, 2022. As reported by Action News 5, Abston entered his guilty plea to charges including first-degree murder and especially aggravated kidnapping.
The plea allows Abston to avoid the death penalty; instead, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In a case that garnered significant attention due to the tragic circumstances, the resolution signifies that Abston, previously sentenced to 80 years for a 2021 rape and kidnapping of Alicia Franklin, shall remain behind bars for life, preventing the potential for future harm. According to Local Memphis, Abston's trial was initially set for February 2025 but, he opted for a guilty plea instead.
Eliza Fletcher was remembered as a dedicated educator and an avid runner. In a statement following the tragedy, Fletcher's family said, "No legal resolution and no sentence can diminish the anguish of Liza's murder," in remarks shared by The Commercial Appeal. They also expressed gratitude towards law enforcement and the district attorney's office for their dedication to seeking justice for Fletcher.
The case has been significant in the community, following the extensive manhunt and the discovery of Fletcher's body days after her abduction. Details about Fletcher’s past, her role as an educator at St. Mary's Episcopal School, and her academic achievements highlight the personal story behind the headlines. Abston's criminal history, including connections to previous unsolved cases through DNA evidence, was important in reaching this resolution.
