Early this morning, a car crash in the Cherokee neighborhood escalated into a shooting incident. According to Action News 5, Memphis Police are investigating the events that occurred around 1 a.m. near Cherokee Boulevard and Prescott Road, where two vehicles were involved in the aftermath.
When officers arrived, they found that the car accident had led to gunfire. A man was found with two gunshot wounds—one in his left arm and another near his shoulder, according to FOX13 Memphis. Before being injured, he was trying to help a driver involved in the crash and reported hearing about 15 shots. The driver he was assisting allegedly fired at individuals in a gold Mercedes Benz who had arrived at the scene, prompting them to return fire.
In a related incident reported by FOX13 Memphis, another man arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest after being driven there in a private vehicle. He stated that while he was trying to help after the crash, someone in a silver Infiniti shot at him. The victim also claimed that two men approached him at the scene and searched his pockets, even though he told them he was unarmed and did not fight back.
Amid the confusion, a handgun was found at the intersection, indicating the violence that occurred. WREG reported that it is still unclear if there were additional injuries beyond those already identified. The Memphis Police Department is working to piece together the events, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
