As Hispanic Heritage Month wraps up, the Mesquite Police Department takes a moment to spotlight the contributions of the Hispanic community, and one officer in particular is getting a nod for his exemplary service. According to the Mesquite Police Department's Facebook post, Officer Steven Contreras has been a formidable presence in Mesquite both in and out of uniform since he joined the force back in 2005.
Hailing from Poteet, Texas before gravitating to Mesquite, Contreras is a product of local schools, graduating from West Mesquite High School. His rise within the Mesquite Police Department has been steady, transforming from a Detention Officer to a multi-disciplinary law enforcement officer. His range of roles includes Patrol Officer, School Resource Officer, Crime Prevention Specialist, Criminal Investigator, Police Academy Instructor, and, he's also a member of the Hostage Negotiations Team. The department celebrated Contreras, particularly on October 14, aligning with Indigenous Peoples' Day; a time when the nation reflects on the histories and cultures of Indigenous American people.
The accolades for Officer Contreras aren't just wall decorations, they signify a career punctuated by service and excellence. With two lifesaving awards, a Certificate of Civic Achievement, a Service Champion Award, and a Master Peace Officer License under his belt, he consistently goes beyond the call of duty. Officer Contreras' skills are further enhanced by his role as a certified Spanish translator, and his profound commitment to education; evidenced by a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of North Texas Dallas Campus.
